Still Waters

Where now the dark lady
With head of black and dress of night?
Where now the shine of gold
Who in her glance glitters bright?
Where is her wanton kiss
That frigid heart sets alight,
With bergamot and orange blossom
You once took delight?

She has passed through your fingers
To castles, courts, and lover’s bed
Like cool water running swift,
Running still, running deep through your head.

How low your fire burns.
Your love like coal smolders red.
How you wander wayless,
Your lover gone, your lady wed.
How you curse the lonely nights
And all the words you never said
That left you longing ere and now
To kiss her dusky head.

She has passed through your fingers
To castles, courts, and lover’s bed
Like cool water running swift,
Running still, running deep through your head.
