The Eastern Light

A starless night steals
Across the sea,
Where I stray, half-sunk
In the boundless, black brine.
Arms weary, I thrash
Amid the violent waves,
Whose frothy peaks
Push me far from shore.

But in the eastern sky
Dawns a hopeful glimmer:
A radiant girl wreathed in light
With smile beaming,
Shadow fleeing. Like holy fire
She burns away
The night. And as the churning sea
Lies still with a sigh, her gentle hand
Plucks me from the salty depths.
To safe harbors she leads me.
On steady ground she sets me,
And nothing more will I know
But her sweet lips and soft embrace.
